Thanks again to all of you! I am still quite surprised by the responce to this picture! Here are a few "how-to" tips for this kind of shot...
It actually isn't as hard as you might expect if you start off correctly.
1) When taking the pictures, use a tripod and don't change the position of the camera, the camera settings, or the lighting in between shots. The only thing that should change is the location of the person in the pictures. It is extremely easy to blend these pictures together in Photoshop when they have been taken in this way.
2) To compile the photos in Photoshop, start with one picture as the background.
3) Then add another picture with the subject in a different position on top of the background as a new layer.
4) Next, simply erase the portions of the top layer to reveal the subject in the original background shot. Very little detail work is needed to blend these pictures since everything in the pictures will line up correctly with each other. You don't have to cut each person out with microscopic detail because the background has not changed!
5)This can simply be repeated with multiple layers.
*Important* THIS PROCESS IS VERY QUICK AND EASY SO LONG AS THE SUBJECT IN THE PICTURES DOES NOT OVERLAP HIM/HERSELF IN THE VARIOUS LAYERS OF THE COMPOSITE PICTURE. (It's ok for them to overlap, it just requires more detail work.)
6) If the subject is overlapping him/herself, then blending the photos is a little more challenging. The best advise I can give is to zoom in on these overlapping areas, select a small eraser tool, and patiently remove anything that is not suposed to be there.
Note: It is usually extremely difficult to get hair to look natural if you have to blend it in this way. You tend to end up with a cardboard cutout look. The easiest solution is to avoid situations where a person's hair/head is overlapping themself in one of the other layers. If it can't be helped the it just takes a lot of patience and practice.
7) Once you have compiled your photos, you may notice that there is light in areas that you would expect to see a shadow. Use the burn/dodge tool to add shadows in whatever areas you would expect to see them.
8) (This is one of the most important steps) PRACTICE. There are many different ways to do this kind of project, and the best way to learn is to get familiar with all the fun little tools that come with these programs and practice.
I hope this is helpful.
Have fun!
