What is this?

One thing constructive I can recommend, is that you could have tilted the camera angle down enough to eliminate the washed-out sky in the background.
Have you tried a digital conversion to black and white?
That would help to define the graphic qualities of the object..(whatever it is), and make the sky less noticeable. #198277

This looks like a cannon that exploded backwards (thats why the title ?). Regarding the photo, I agree with the previous comment, and a different angle so that, while still showing the broken area, you could show more clearly what the object is. #991396
