I find dragonflies very tough to photograph, but you have mastered it here with this image. I think the blurred background is great and allows the viewer's attention to go to your subject. The lovely wings are sharp and the detail shows beautifully. I also think the soft light is ideal. I'd like to know what lens you used, focal length, f-stop, shutter speed, ISO etc if you care to share. I'm inspired to get out and try dragonfly shots of my own #939469

Thanks Heather for your kind words. Details were as follows:
Lens: Sigma 105/2.8 Macro;
Shutter speed 1/160;
Aperture 4.5;
ISO 100;
Tripod; manual focus.
Levels & sharpness adjusted in GIMP. This is a four-spotted skimmer, I find them easy to approach compared with most other dragonfly species. #6045350

Congratulations on this lovely shot John. Not an easy subject to shoot, and yet it is beautifully sharp, and stands out so nicely from the background. This may be a silly question, but please could you tell me what is GIMP? #6217272

John Dawkins July 22, 2008

Thanks Erica, Kristy, Heather, Kay and Vickie. Vickie, GIMP is a photo editing program that can do many things that photoshop can (i.e. layers), with the benefit that it is free. #6218790
