And as for you Tyler...in case you haven't noticed, this image was entered into the DIGITAL DARKROOM category, which is for pictures that are SPECIFICALLY and PURPOSELY DIGITIZED!
If you dislike the technology and the category for some personal reason, then I suggest you take it up with Better Photo, Canon and Adobe...until then, just don't look! #909882

Karma Wilson November 14, 2004

Tyler,

Yea, Wendy's gallery is just FULL of altered pictures. She just puts it all together on the computer. NOT! Sheesh. Look at her gallery. She is so talented it's ridiculous. This picture was posted in Digital Darkroom, and for such it is ART. It's a digital creation, just what it was meant to be! It's so well done. Do you often come across mansions with spirits peeking out the windows and bats flying around them? If so, I would suggest medication.

Good day.

Kris Lingle November 14, 2004

Awesome job Wendy! What a perfect Halloween image.

As for the digitized comments. To each is own. The technology out there is endless and why not have a great time creating the new techno art! It is that art.

Good job. #909961

Barbara Gordon November 14, 2004

Wendy, your work is so superior. I LOVE this picture and I hope to get to this level someday. Forget the Tylers and nay-sayers who only understand one art form and can't appreciate another. It's almost like saying, well, it doesn't count because you didn't paint it or sketch it. Sad for them. #910009

November 14, 2004

shut up all of you! people today are afraid to take sweet pictures. artistic pictures. they all feel the need to use adobe and all that jazz as a crutch. it's rediculous! if it's a good photo to start with, end it with that! don't enhance it because you didn't get the shutterspeed right or f-stop to a bigger or smaller setting. i'm sure the picture by itself would've been a good capture, it's a cool house and creepy in itself! I give her credit for it. but why enhance a picture? it's almost saying that you didn't do a good enough job in the first place and have to rely on something other than you yourself to make something better. go to barnes and nobles and look at the black and white books even color and how they didn't use and digital program to make the photo better. that's a true photographer. someone who uses handy tricks picked up with experience and study of the camera. not a person who has to make a photo a good photo by digitizing it. it is good work though with adobe or whatever program you used Wendy, don't get me wrong. but I am getting tired of photo's of the day being images enhance by computers. anyone can use those programs to make a crap picture a great one. get out there photographers! and maybe everyone who disagrees with me should shut up and get a camera and start doing some work, real work not on a computer!

Wendy M. Amdahl level-classic November 15, 2004

Let us maintain our decorum! You know Tyler...I'm sorry that you dislike digigtized work, that's your opinion and you are entitled to it. However, there is a DIGITAL category on this web site for people like me who happen to enjoy manipulating photos as ANOTHER type of art. I am a highly capable photographer with or without the use of photoshop, and I submit both types of photography to this contest. I also get paid to take the traditional, unaltered photos that you speak of.

You are right in that this picture as it stood, was a technically perfect shot before the PS work. However, I did not choose to use PS to mask ineptitudes, but rather to create a spooky scene that did not exist, for fun and artistic pleasure. I then proceeded to enter it into the appropriate category for that type of photography.

And there is a specific place and category for digigtized art on Better Photo...like it or not! The people who submit to it aren't trying to pass off inferior photos as you so wrongly accuse...rather they enjoy photo manipulation as it's own form of photographic art. So don't make the obtuse mistake of confusing diversity with incompetency. If they wanted to submit a photo with NO alteration, they have 9 other categories to choose from. But according to BP's rules, even those categories are open to manipulated photography.

You may not appreciate it's merits, but that doesn't make it wrong. Nor does it make it right for you to disparage other photographers abilites or efforts just because they happen to like to work with both types of photography.

You are certainly entitled to disagree with Better Photo's choice to offer a Digital Photography category...but this thread, on this one picture, truly is not the forum for doing so. Write to BP with your arguments against Digital, and tell them that you don't want Digitized pictures to get recoginition. There is a Q&A forum as well where you can bring up the argument.

But I for one love all types of photography...traditional, B&W, digitally manipulated, you name it! And I'm proficient enough in my skills to produce all types...I just happen to enjoy digital manipulation as much as I enjoy traditional photography. That doesn't qualify me as wrong or inept!

We would love to see your body of "all unaltered" work as well Tyler. Do you have a gallery here or do you submit to the contest? If so, please post the links for us all to see and enjoy! In the meantime, you may honestly want to take up your debate with Better Photo if you hope to get results. Best of luck to you in your photographic career!

Wendy #910716

Janet Detota November 15, 2004

Well said, Wendy! Looking forward to seeing Tyler's work. #910787

Marcie A. Fowler November 15, 2004

I missed this photo but I'm glad I came and looked now!! It is a fabulous example of DIGITAL art. Transforming images is just a much an art form as taking them to begin with. Whether they are altered or unaltered you must (and I know you do Wendy) start with a great image to start with!! Fantastic work on this as you accomplished exactly what you were going for!! #910794

Gloria B. Wood November 15, 2004

Tyler Tyler Tyler....this contraversy is as old as art itself!!! The history of art is full of those who cling stubbornly to the past and those who move bravely forward into something new and different! There have always been scoffers who ridicule the pioneers. You cannot stop exploration into new frontiers in art...it will happen! #910828

kathy wolfe November 15, 2004

Fantastic! and congratulations on the POTD! How fitting for the month of October!! Truly a wonderful wonderful image!!!!

Tyler - perhaps this isnt the place to start a debate..perhaps you should email Wendy personally or even better - BetterPhoto! Dont stink up her comment thread with your less than desirable opinions - email her! #910852

John P. Roberts, Jr. November 15, 2004

Perhaps Tyler should work on mastering such things as English grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, etc., and then move on to something like photography. Crawl before you walk, Tyler. #910853

Paul Michko November 15, 2004

Fantastic image, Wendy. Creativity is a gift no matter the means. It is a wonderful age we live in where we have so many tools at our disposal. Some choose not to use them, however that usually means they do not have the talent to use the tools in a way which will help their art. There are many tutorials available for Photoshop if you would like to learn more about that form of creativity,Tyler. There is no need to put down others for their photographic and computer graphic skill simply because you are uneducated in the use of such tools. #910894

Pamela K November 15, 2004

Very well done PS effects! I'm really impressed with the way the ghosts seem to be a part of the picture and are not just posted on there. What was your technique for adding them? Did you use the burn tool or something else?

Pam #911030

Wendy M. Amdahl level-classic November 15, 2004

Thank you to everyone for your support and kind feeback...we are a diverse group with many interests and tastes, and it's nice to be able to appreciate those differences. Variety is the spice of life! :o)

Pamela, actually it was a multi stepped process and I did add them as addtional layers. I took another photo of a sunset with people silhouettes that I had taken, and created new layers with just those silhouettes, not the sunset. Then once I had them over to the house, I shrunk and distorted them with the liquify filter until they appeared ghostly. Then I put them in their respective windows and adjusted the opacity to give them more of a sheerness. I thought they were cute! Hope that answers your question. :o) #911081

Pamela K November 15, 2004

Thanks Wendy! Now I'm even more impressed with your PS work! Very well done combining multiple photos!

Wendy, the more I look at this photo the more I love it! You should be able to make good money with this shot as well!
Tyler, you must be young so I will be gentle....This is NOT the place for you to spew your ugly comments. To make POTD or any kind of finalist or win is a HUGE honor. It is VERY hard to do. When you are awarded with this honor it is your right to just basque in that glory. By having someone make comments such as yours is like having someone poke holes in your balloon. Shame on you! Read Wendy's note to you carefully, she had one great point after another. If you feel so strongly then start a group of your own for purists, until then learn to play nice. #911126

Patricia A. Kuniega November 15, 2004

Tsk! Tsk! Tyler, for using this forum to spew your nasties. Why rain on someone else's parade when you don't have one of your own? If you had created anything of value, whether it be "purist" photography or a digital creation, you too might have earned a place as a POTD or some other recognition. But sadly I suppose you lack these skills, along with common decency and etiquette. And where is your pure, unadulterated work hidden? Sigh.

I feel genuinely sorry for anyone who lacks the creativity and inspiration to step outside their narrow view and experience the thrill and joy of creating something that goes beyond merely capturing reality, but that transcends it into the world of imagination and art. Following Tyler's illogic, I suppose that Disney should have ignored animation, Michelangelo should have painted in caves, and the Beatles should have stuck to the Big Band sound. The spirit of great art is founded in breaking the rules and shattering old notions.

I read an interesting article on the subject this weekend, and rather than bore everyone on Wendy's thread, I'll simply quote a few of the comments that were made by the artist and photographer, Karen Nichols.

IS PHOTOSHOP FOR CHEATERS?

The process of producing a photograph consists both of the capturing of the image and the processing of it in a darkroom (be it a traditional darkroom or a digital darkroom like Photoshop). Two of Ansel Adams' best quotes on the subject are:

"The negative is the equivalent of the composer's score, and the print the performance." and...

"Dodging and burning are steps to take care of mistakes God made in establishing tonal relationships."

"In short, I'll do whatever I need to do to fulfill my artistic vision of what the image should be. I don't take snapshots; I'm not a documentarian.
I'm trying to produce art.

I often sense an undercurrent of feeling that those of us who post-
process are somehow "cheating," or have not yet mastered the art of taking a good photograph and need to use image editing tools to rescue sub-optimal images. Although I agree that you need to start with a good image capture, I think that only gets you part way toward a great image. In some cases, post-processing may not be
needed, but in many cases, availing yourself of the tools in the digital darkroom can transform a good image into a great one. After all, Ansel Adams didn't drop off his film at 1-hour photo for processing."

I hope that Wendy's spirits (even those in the windows!) were not dashed by this thread that was meant to recognize and congratulate her for her fine work. #911631

Dan Holm November 15, 2004

Belated CONGRATS on your POTD, Wendy!! It's an EXCELLENT digital image! ... For those whose aesthetic senses are offended by or who have serious artistic problems w/ digitally manipulated images, maybe this DIGITAL site isn't for them. Everything about a computer-based contest is by nature digitally mediated. For the (ahm) "purist" who can't tolerate any digital manipulation at all, I suggest they not even bother to digitally upload their image (where it's subject to alteration via compression and a million other technical anomalies in the upload and viewing process - unintentional manipulation). ... As for Tyler: The best you can do is: a) not engage in an argument on this site you'll NEVER win , b) Enter other types of contests that are NOT computer based, c) Learn that creative criticism should be given gently and positively and finally, d) Keep in mind that people who live in glass houses should NEVER throw stones! ... #911725

you guys are absolutly right, wendy did do an incredible job. I can't lie about that. I did like her work, it was an incredible job. it's awesome that she spent time doing such a piece and the work put into it is great. wendy, I applaud your POTD, it is an honor to win such an award. you are very talented in what you do and I encourage you to keep it up. i'll admitt that it was wrong of me to just put my thoughts down. I was tired of seeing digitized work win over analog prints. i've been screwed over by such things in art competitions where I would've been 2nd, 3rd, and even 1st a couple of times. but the judges picked the digital print when it was in the analog category. so wendy, I do apologize to you and the others I have ticked off. sorry it was your print too. i'll take up the note on talking to BP and seeing if they'll have 2 photo's of the day. 1 analog and 1 digital. and a few other things, I have been working with photoshop for awhile. spelling and all that jibber jabber, I don't care about because this is just an internet site and not a paper of any kind. again Wendy and to all of you, I apologize and thank you for your suggestions.

-Tyler #918234

Patricia A. Kuniega November 16, 2004

Deep down you're a good dude Tyler! I wasn't ticked off so much as I'm just passionate about the subject. It's good to remember that when you make a comment like the original one, it brings down the person who receives it... especially after being so happy to get a POTD. It's better to take up a debate on the discussion boards here. There you can debate to your hearts content.

What makes BP a unique site and such a wonderful place to post work, is that both formats are accepted here. Jim (and the judges) view both types of images to be acceptable forms of art and more importantly, they *value* both!! This attitude gives people the leeway to create freely and experiment, producing some of the most fabulous images on the web. I enjoy both paths to creating images and wouldn't want to have to choose between the two. On the days when "straight" photography shots are posted as POTD, I can assure you that you won't hear the digital artists complaining. There's enuff divide in America, let's live in peace over our camera/darkroom work! #918503
