Magic, I want to go... Must have been really good fun getting the tripod right on that beach, Congrats... #915240

Ali Hoolash November 16, 2004

Thanks all for your very nice comments!
Kevin, the most difficult part was getting to the beach itself and then back to firm ground after sunset! Some big rocks around helped in setting up the tripod as well as resting our bags!
Anyway, that's the fun part of photography when you see all your efforts finally pay! #915399

November 16, 2004

Stunning image, Ali! If I were to guess, I'd suspect that you used a grad density filter oriented along the diagonal formed by the rocks. And if so, how clever, and how effective.

What a beautiful photograph! Did you use any special filters or software enhancements? #917308

Ali Hoolash November 16, 2004

Hi Larraine, thank you for your nice comments. The only filters used were a polariser, an ND filter and a Grey Graduated filter; all used to allow a slow shutter speed and to balance the background and foreground exposures. With the exception of a little saturation boost, there were no other software enhancements.

Ali, I think this deserved to be a winner, sorry to see that it 'only' got POTD and nominated as a finalist. Kev #922748

Ali Hoolash November 18, 2004

Thanks, Kevin! I know how tough it is for the judges to select the winners among so many top photos. I've been a judge in photo contests too and it was always with some regrets that I had to cast aside some "awesome" shots.
I get consolation in that it has got its share of success for being selected as POTD. Of course, I would have wished that it had made it in top selection but you can't have everything in life, can you? :-) #923816

Kevin Elliott November 18, 2004

Ali, you're 100% right, I wouldn't like to be the one chucking out really good images. I've done some judging in the past, not of photos though, and it was often very difficult to separate the best ones. Congrats again
