I can't agree with all the previous comments. The first thing I thought when I opened this picture was 'that sky really looks fake'. And it was. In my opinion, if you can't capture the scene adequately at the time of exposure, at least make your manipulation convincing. Mainly, it is the border between sky and earth that is a bit obvious... #4170405

Mick Burkey April 16, 2007

A wonderful work of art, Randy. And well deserving of the second place win.

BTW, I couldn't disagree more with Dan C. The first thing I thought when opening this picture was "how dramatic". It's obvious you are making art, not simply documenting a moment. That's what photojournalists do, IMO. I trust there is room for both here at BP. And while I agree that you want the manipulations to be convincing, that, too, is a subjective decision made by the artist about what was his/her vision and the viewer on what they see.

Keep up the good work, Randy. It is appreciated. #4174162

April 16, 2007

Well Mick, sure we are making art. However, there are certain basic guidelines that need to be followed in order to produce a convincing image. Most people on this site typically offer nothing more by way of comments than 'awesome photo!', which is pretty useless in terms of improving our photography through constructive critiques. Look at the clouds in this picture: the sun is obviously setting BEHIND the mountains if you were to take this photo at face value, and thus the light in the foreground is completely incongruous with the digitally inserted sky. Agreed that most people wouldn't pick up on this, but I did, and thought the effect was quite displeasing. Randy, keep up the good work, the desert scenes in your gallery are great - much better when you stick to reality in my humble opinion. #4174288

randy dannheim April 16, 2007

I am flattered that my image is receiving this much attention. I really didn't think it was all that good myself. Thank you Mick for your wonderful defense and by the number of winners (first place x 2 and your many finalist) your opinion of my work is welcomed. And for you, Mr. Dan C. yours is welcome too. It takes many differing taste to make up a site like BP. From a purrest point of view this image doesn't hold water, because of what you pointed out so observently. I didn't intend this image to make sense.
I was at the rock on an overcast morning and the light was purfect for capturing the water and surrounding color because of the defused light which allowed for the slow shutter speed. When I posted this image, Bill Wyatt (another BP member) stated that this was a great winning image if it only had a more dramatic sky. This was my very first attempt at replacing a sky. Because it was a sky from Tuscon facing East at Sunset I knew the light wouldn't match the rock facing South at 8AM in the morning. The colors worked so well, I decided to use it anyway. That is why I entered it into DIGITAL DARKROOM - get it - NO RULES. I welcome your comments, I was surprised that it won myself, but it did and it was because like Bill said, it need a new sky. I entered the original image also, nobody noticed but Bill. Thank you Bill for your Critiqe and suggestion that ended in a winning image. Dan thank you also, it looked fake to me too, because it was! as I stated in my comment on the image. #4175883
