Being a geologist, Tomas, I find the line movement of the an interesting structural feature of the photo. Amazing what wind can do. A nicely framed composition. Congratulations on your finalist and good luck on the next round. #3752743

wot a great shot, j/w how did the rock move, love the shot tho :) #3822969

I love the shot!

I find it very interesting. I guess I should ask the geologist here, instead of you, because I know that you might be just as puzzled...Is it possible that this rock, somehow, landed where the line starts, and then proceeded to skid across, causing the line? I guess if that was so, there would be a much bigger indentation, and then it would not have been able to skid? It just seems to me that this rock doesn't match it's surroundings.

It reminds me of an old child's song that keeps haunting me these past couple of weeks. :-) #3823799

Sorry, then again, we went to The Badlands National Park this past August, and all of the rocks that I saw out there were very different. I guess anything is possible. #3823806

January 15, 2007

lol im pretty stumped as well, possible there was once water there and it was moved that way but u would think the line it left would be filled by now, or it is done by man ??? #3823810

Upon closer inspection, it seems that the ground could have recently been, and still might partially be, a little wet. I suppose that someone could have "skipped" that rock along the wet mud. Then again, where are the footprints? Hmm... #3823891

I do teach geology and earth science, but am not a PhD, so I'm not really an expert. I do know, from alot of my geological adventures, that there are some pretty weird things that can happen in nature. That doesn't mean that this event occurred because of an act of God, but could have been an act of man. At least the rock placed there. Though, the mud on the rock indicates it was in some mud at one time. Winds have been known to pick up or drag some pretty heavy rocks and take them places. Glaciers or volcanic type activities (ie. Mt. St. Helen mudslides) also can create a landscape like this. I would probably suspect a mudslide (looking at all the mud cracks and the mountains in the background) brought the rock along with it and then either wind or man made the line. It depends on how old the landscape is and how much human activity goes on there. If this is thousands of years old, then yes, I believe the wind could eventually have dragged the rock along that far. It's difficult to tell without more information about the area, especially the geology. #3824005

I've done a little research on these stones for anyone who is interested. This is a natural phenomenon that has been researched by geologists who are still a little stunted as to how the rocks do move. If anyone is interested go to this website for the explanation: http://www.frontiernet.net/~docbob/boulder.htm #3852849

Very nice capture.

The line behind the rock seems to give it life.
