Wow--This is so beautiful....Wonderful image Marianna. Did you do anything to give it this look? #482061

Marianna Safronova July 11, 2006

Kathy, thank you for your comment. This photo is taken indoor with artificial light but on regular slide
film which shifts colors. I used two table lamps very close to the flower.
(two to cancel out most shadows)
and dark cloth background.
I have other flower images obtained
using the same technique posted
in my gallery.

Marianna - Gorgeous! The images in your gallery have the most beautiful color I've ever seen! Forgive me for asking, but do you attribute the depth and clarity of your colors to the camera? filters? digital enhancement? special lighting?

The composition of "In dreams" is staggering. Well done! #3016292

Deb,

It varies with the picture. Before I switched to digital, I was using only the vivid professional slide film (Velvia 50 for flowers as this and Velvia 100 when it come out for landscapes). In this shot, the light from two close table lamps is what greats the "glow". For landscapes, most of the pictures are taken just after sunrise or just before sunset when the colors are the most saturated. It is incredible to see the difference in light on the rock when sunset sun comes out of the clouds! I use "Landscape" setting on the D70 camera and post-process using Nikon Capture Editor and PS as needed.
I also used special enhancer filter for some of the film photos but I don't see particular reason to do it for the digital since I can get the same effect with Nikon sofware (that I got with the camera).

Good luck with your London photo sales!

Thanks for the info, Marianna! I'm not familiar with the Nikon Capture Editor. How does it differ from what you can do with Photoshop? #3019672

Marianna Safronova July 12, 2006

Deb,

It is specifically degigned to load in raw format from Nikon Digital cameras (I have D70). I only store raw format with max quality. As I understand, you manupulate 12-bit image instead of 8-bit with full software features which does not lead to as much deterioration. It has some features PS does not, like resetting color temperature and, most importantly restoration of shadows. The later one did not work too well before but now it is so much better and not as slow. Essentially, as long as highlights are not blown you can save almost anything within reason. Its sharpening and noise reduction is pretty good too. On the other hand, you can not do masks that you do in PS. I find Nikon Editor and PS complimentary, NE will open file into PS directly.
