This was taken freehand w/2 second exposure. They are just Christmas lights piled on the carpet. I rotated the camera from side to side while moving back and forth a few inches. In this shot there are only six or seven lights. Trial and error, I probably took a hundred shots before I got this one. It was really a matter of playing with different camera motion and exposure, and using different colors (sometimes too many red or pink lights).
