Get real guys - this photo is not cute/adorable/fun. It's a picture of a sad depressed wild animal in concrete wilderness where there has been no attempt to simulate its natural environment. Pasting snow to try and give the photo some credence does nothing for its integrity. I do not see what this photo has to offer in terms of technical competence, subject matter or production. Sorry! (but not really)Outside of this photo, am I the only subscriber who thinks that we need to call time on the special effects created in Photoshop that masquerade as photography or do we all just want a pat on the back. #2241825

January 01, 2006

its cute but you can tell the snow was added on but still good shoot of the grizzly! I like it!congrats on your potd! #2242076

Gloria B. Wood January 01, 2006

So Jeff...all of the above responses...all of the judges....and a host of other contest sites where Wally has gained recognition are all wrong, and you,(whoever you are), are here to share your wisdom and judgement regarding this photo and the excellent Photographer and artist who we are honoring today???? January 01, 2006

Totally mis-read my comments. This is not some personal attack; it is not about the photographer or any of his other work; we are not "honouring the photographer"; I am not saying I am better ( in fact I know I am not); it is not about what I can do; IT'S ABOUT THIS ONE PHOTO. Do I need to have made wine to say I don't like a particular bottle. Does a film critic need to have made a better film than the one he is reviewing? Of course not. It may also be true that those who have an adverse opinion are less likely to make any reasoned analysis because other subscribers react to anything which is not unreservedly congratulatory. #2242313

Rhonda Smith January 01, 2006

Hi Wally.. I think this is a wonderful capture all on it's own merit.. with or without the snow. I bet it would be good in b&w too maybe with a touch of soft focus added for a 'dreamy look'. Congrats on all the recognition you've recieved for this shot.. well deserved indeed.

and Jeff.. I'm a big advocate for constructive feedback .. I just think it should be tempered with a touch of kindness. You are very opinionated for a guy who doesn't offer up any of his own work for review and feedback or even an email address.... Nice!!! #2242340

Garth D. Beatty level-classic January 01, 2006

Very Nice!! #2242485

Kara L. Hendricks January 01, 2006

Well Wally.. I think this is charming.. With or without PS work.. Sorry to see your special day and honored image tainted by a negative comment.. I know this is an open forum and we can receive critique at any time.. But an image that is chosen as POTD must have SOME redeeming quality that stood out to the judges.. So I say GOOD FOR YOU!!!
And Jeff, I know you as a viewer reserve the right to your opinion.. We are all here just to have fun and share in something we love... A little recognition along the way is a great confidence builder, what's the harm in letting someone enjoy their moment? You have us at a disadvantage, we have galleries, contact options.. Where are yours? Nonetheless.. Remember next time you leave constructive critique.. (And I say that loosly!!) This is a friendly site.. Play Nice!
Again Wally... Congrats on this darling shot! #2242510

Wally, congrats on your POTD. Bet you didn't know this would stir up so many comments. The compostion, lighting, and the creativity of the snow are wonderful. We all sit and play with our software, hoping to create something that enhances our image, and inspires our viewer. I like the snow, so I disagree with Jeff on that. I guess some people have issues with zoos, and feel a lot of empathy for the animals in captivity, so maybe Jeff was just responding to his own strong emotions about that. I do feel this photo had technical competence. Wally had a strong pyramid composition, didn't cut off the animals foot, etc. Jeff, critques are wonderful, we learn from them. It just came off as pretty negative, when there were many wonderful qualities that were not addressed. Don't let this keep you from setting up a gallery to show your work. #2244385
