A silhouette of the bronze sculpture of Mercury which caps the fountain in the rotunda of the National Gallery of Art. Composed against the building's north window which features a scalloped grille. His winged hat, and winged shoes, enable his speedy travels. He carries a caduceus staff, a symbol of trade, commerce and negotiation (Mercury is considered a god of trade, financial gain and abundance.) The caduceus has been confused with the Rod of Asclepius - a stick with a single entwined snake. The Rod is the ancient symbol of medicine and healing, yet in North America in particular, the caduceus has been used (incorrectly, it turns out) to symbolize the medical profession almost exclusively.
