Thank you for the comments, they are greatly appreciated. In this shot I was testing out my new Tamron 150 to 600 mm zoom lens. Sometimes good timing is critical to getting a great shot !Dave Godwin #11092254

Great shot. Appreciate the fortune in the setting, but great job of capturing it and being ready to get the shot when it came your way. #11092283Jeff Robinson July 25, 2014
Congrats Dave on this Outstanidng POTD!! #11092317Songbird Cline July 25, 2014
great shot of pileated woodpeckers .... You didnt use a voice call to get the photo did you?David L. Godwin July 25, 2014
No did not use any calling to get the photo. They are are male/female pair and I heard them outside in the trees in my backyard. They landed pretty close to my back deck and chased each other around the tree for several minutes. That allowed me to go inside and get my telephoto lens and take a series of pictures.Dave Godwin

Wow!! I'd love to get a shot that good of just one of these beauties, and you got two!! Fantastic shot Dave!! Congratulations on your POTD!! #11092464Songbird Cline July 26, 2014
I am SO glad to hear that you were able to get this wonderful photo without using a recorded bird call, and to have them in your back yard is fantastic. As I'm sure you know, and some people may not be aware, using a call to attract any bird in a National Forest is prohibited. I know someone who violated the rules and puts the birds at risk just to get a photo. It makes me happy to know that you are a lucky and responsible bird photographer.Songbird Cline July 26, 2014
