Calder’s Untitled, 1976. One of Calder’s last commissions designed for the atrium of the East Building, National Gallery of Art. Since steel (his traditional material) was too heavy, he used honeycombed aluminum, an extremely light yet durable material originally developed for aeronautics in its place. The new material also improved the mobile’s ability to respond to air currents. He died about a year before the full-scale work was installed

An awesome work of artistry for Calder and for you! He was a Philadelphian and the sculptor of the huge statue of William Penn atop City Hall. (not to mention the rest of the scultures in the building and many around town).A great capture of THIS piece, Rona. #9449042

A wonderful shot of Calder's mobile, Rona! Too bad he never made it long enough to see his work installed. #9449418Rona L. Schwarz June 07, 2011
Thank you all so very much for those kind comments! The original mobile is much larger and very impressive, but I really wanted a close up of the ceiling lines with some pieces of the mobile. Besides, it was impossible to get a close-up of the whole mobile and the ceiling without also including the rest of the space, people, etc. #9449579Sign up for an interactive online photography course to get critiques on your photos.
