this is a great shot....a little creepy for me because I watch to many Scifi movies. I just watch battleship last night not a very good scifi movie

As always when it comes to light paint they are always great and fun to look at. I love the star action it adds to the shot #1536122

So Cool, Jeff! Awesome! #10767143

I always enjoy looking at your light painting shots. You have a unique gift in creating these type of images and we all enjoy seeing them. Last night in blue Mesa the stars were so beautiful and bright and I wished I knew something about time lapse and thought of course of you, who would have been out there in the darkest spot in the high desert you could have found, braving giant-sized Mosquitos. #10767474

Jeff- your creative use of light and dark always astounds me- awesome !! #10767698

Beth Spencer July 15, 2013

Awesome as usual Jeff, did you combine a lot or did you have a lot of bike tires for the half domes? #10768745

Jeff E Jensen July 15, 2013

Thanks, ladies! I'm sure you could guess, but I really like doing these.

Beth - this is a single exposure with all of the elements captured within the exposure. This was 1649 seconds, which works out to not quite 28 minutes. We were dealing with no moon, so it was good and dark. Even darker then when we were out at the Jetty because there was even less city light.

I'm actually taking Deb and her family out there again when they are in town next week. #10768753

Beth Spencer July 15, 2013

Wow! You guys did a lot in that amount of time! I know you all were probably having a total blast! I know Deb and her family will have as much fun as we did!!! #10768765

Very creative and inspiring work, Jeff. I just love this technique. Would you share more about the set up and technique? I would love to try it if I can find a place to do it. #10770392

lisa anderson July 17, 2013

Very cool, Jeff. Do you have any shots of the domes with less sky? #10771043

Jeff E Jensen July 17, 2013

Thanks, everyone!

Susan - we used several tools to create this, all of them pretty simple. The orb is created using an LED light on the end of a string. The trick is how you spin and rotate to get the orb. The big dome was created using a piece of PVC pipe, staked to the ground in the center, with some LED lights on the other end. You move it back and forth in an arc while rotating around the center. The small domes are a little trickier. They are created with a set of led Christmas lights, mounted around the diameter of an old bicycle wheel. Fun stuff.

Lisa - here's a shot of a single dome (our first try with the gadget), with a little less sky. #10771183

Wow, that second shot looks like it would be a scene out of a great movie. Cool #10771221

Jeff E Jensen July 18, 2013

Oops, that wasn't our first dome shot, that was our group shot for the night. Here's the first dome shot. #10771555

Elaine Hessler July 18, 2013

Well, all of them totally rock! Nothing to add, but how did you keep track of where you put all those domes? None overlap and they are all spaced out really well.

VERY COOL! #10771853
