Here's one for Dale's challenge. It meets the criteria, it was shot using a tripod and was longer than a 1/4 second exposure. That's all I'm saying. #1504246

Very neat! I can't believe how sharp this is. How many tries did it take and would you mind telling us how you did this? You have so many tricks up your sleeve... #10471303Dale Hardin December 20, 2012 0
Jeff, you need to learn not to drop things. :o) #10471324Jeff E Jensen December 20, 2012 0
Thanks, everyone. It's winter, so it's time to move inside for some high speed stuff again. We figured that smashing some ornaments was appropriate. So, I'll add the shooting data to the image so that you can see what the settings were. But, here's the basics: This was sot with a 10 second shutter in a completely dark room (my garage). We had two speedlights set up with an audio trigger (you were right, Chris) set to fire them when the ornaments collided. The trick was keeping everything lined up so that focus was maintained. We found a cardboard tube that fit the ornaments and suspended it from a couple of light stands. The lower ornaments were held in place with a bit of hot glue and we used a sheet of black glass to give us the reflection. The first few drops, the ornament actually bounced off and then shattered when it hit the floor. So, we filled them about half way with water and it worked like a charm. We purposely positioned the lower ornament with the stem facing up so that the impact would shatter the dropping ornament. We could usually get two drops out of each of the lower ornaments. It was a whole bunch of fun and made a giant mess. Can't wait to do it again! #10471463

That is unbelieveable! So was this a whole day project? You make it sound very easy. Another question, what else can you use an audio trigger for? I didn't know these things existed... #10471468Kristin Duff December 20, 2012 0
You must have been a lot of fun in the sand box! You would have driven my mother crazy but I would have loved it! #10471546Jeff E Jensen December 20, 2012 0
That's funny, Kristin!Elaine - This was a few hours on a Saturday night. The audio trigger can be used for most anything that makes noise. We've used it for popping balloons, and breaking stuff. We've also used it for blowing stuff up with fire crackers. (That was next on our list but we ran out of time)
Here's a couple more from Saturday. #10471558

These are so Impressive!! They all look awesome and it sounds like a blast - breaking stuff on purpose instead of by accident. #10474259lisa anderson December 22, 2012 0
Wow! What a fun thing to do! I love it! When you say 'we', was your son included in this? Wouldn't that be a great family Christmas tradition...Decorate the tree and then some artistic destruction :) #10474570Peter W. Marks December 22, 2012 0
Ah Jeff! I think Kristin has your early childhood fully evaluated! I am happy you never grew up. I am waiting impatiently for you to aquire one of those super-micro pinhead sized cameras that you can insert in your own brain so that we might share what goes on in there!Kristin Duff December 22, 2012 0
