The Eyes Have It

Wolf Spider
Lycosidae
I have not nailed the species. Bug Guide had the audacity to ask for a photo of his underside but I can't get this Big Bad Wolf to "Roll over". I did teach him to "Sit" by coaxing with crickets. "Roll over" will take a while longer. I am contemplating teaching him to "Play dead" .... shoot his underside on the sole of a shoe.

The eight eyes of the wolf spider are arranged in three rows. The two moderate sized eyes farthest back on the carapace, known as the posterior eye row (PER). Four small eyes positioned in a horizontal row just above the chelicerae (li'l pointed thangs that form the spider's jaws) comprise the anterior eye row (AER). Two large eyes above the AER form the posterior median eyes (PME). To simplify things, just rember, the PMEs are the big suckas.#1297556

Terrific in every way Jim. You do work at your art for sure. #8823797Michelle Alton August 13, 2010
Oh my goodness...whatever you got in your eye yesterday, I think transformed you to a plane that takes you to an even higher plane than you were perched on before. Not only are you an authority on 8-legged critters and the photography thereof, but now you also share a the view of a literary genius!Jim Baines August 13, 2010
When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child, but I was scared of spiders: but when I became a man, I put away childish things, until I retired. For now I see through a glass, clearly; realizing that spiders are pretty good li'l fellas when we go face-to-face. Now, I know in part that I can still walk in a boy's shoes, but then shall I know even as also I am known.Gina Cormier August 13, 2010
Spectacular capture!!!!!!!!! #8824606Val Feldman August 13, 2010
Methinks thou hast imbibed too much of the armadillo punch, Tex...really? Tape a flashlight to your head???!! On second thought, it sure beats any lineup TV has to offer and what the heck, a few snorts of your armadillo punch and I'm certain I'd see plenty of diamond-like flashes of light in my lawn and about anywhere else, to boot!!!! Incredible, awesome and spectacular capture...nothing wrong with your peepers, your camera expertise nor your ability to get up-close and personal with "Wolfie". I'm all agog! :) #8825213Tammy Espino September 15, 2010
