Following many years of construction, the historic Paw Paw Tunnel along Maryland’s C&0 Canal was first open to barge traffic in 1850. It was restored to its present day condition by the Parks Service. Nikkor 20 mm, Provia 100...8 second exposure

Thanks Paul, Tiia, Richard, Dominick, Carolyn and Preeti for your nice comments. This was my first visit to this canal tunnel.
I find it quite fascinating that at that time in our history, this canal route was the primary means for transporting supplies to support a growing nation further inland.
Horse-drawn barges were towed along this canal through many miles of harsh terrain traversing many locks, aquaducts and other manufacturing marvels of the period (like this 3118 foot long tunnel through solid rock).
Eventually though, recurrent Potomac River floods, along with the construction of the railroads, forced this then viable "water highway" into the archives of our history.
