Perigee Moon at Lake Calavera Preserve [Contest Pre Finalists September 2015]
Uploaded: May 06, 2012 01:35:19 | Entered: September 08, 2015 08:35:38
Perigee is the closest point to the earth and it is in this stage that the moon appears larger. Here the moon can be seen near Calavera Lake. The 513-ft. Mount Calavera is not really a mountain at all but rather a 22 million-year-old volcanic plug. A volcanic plug is a mass of volcanic rock that solidified in it's vent and feeding system millions of years ago. When the volcano becomes extinct and starts to erode away, the "plug" is all that is left behind.

So cool, Donna! We were totally clouded in last night, so no full moon visible here. :( #10125850Nikki McDonald May 06, 2012
Gorgeous, Donna. And good for you! We were coming home for shooting for another purpose when the moon began to rise. Since we were driving east, we were treated to 15-20 minutes of its beauty. I didn't see anything I wanted to "put in front of it" and wouldn't have had time to park and set up anyway, so we just kept driving and oohing and aahing. You have found a stunning setting for it - foreground and midfield interest that are beautiful in their own right and support but do not overpower the impact of the moon. Favorite for me. #10125949Carol Eade May 06, 2012
