It's strange how once-in-a-lifetime weather extremes can present themselves in a photograph. The color certainly adds to the mood in this capture, John. It reminds me of a recent documentary on the "Dust Bowl" decade of the '30's during the Great Depression in the U. S. It showed how people in Texas and Oklahoma (to name just two states affected) would sweep every day, then wake to find dust covering everything inside their homes. People walked around with scarves wrapped around their faces. If people drove or walked home with a duststorm overtaking them, they could become so lost they died from exhaustion and lack of water. Farmers' crops dried up for years in a row. Ultimately people would leave the states they'd grown up in and move to places like California to find work. John Steinbeck wrote about it so movingly in "The Grapes of Wrath", a brilliant novel made into a movie with a young Henry Fonda as the main character. Photos like yours can affect people by their eerie beauty, and/or by their reminder of how awful everyday life can be for people caught up in such a situation. Thank you for sharing this, John. It is truly food for thought. #11154262Mary K. Robison October 08, 2014
