Fort Atkinson Tinsmith

Submitted for the PG101 History at Home theme. Fort Atkinson was a short-lived U.S. military post (1820-1827) established at Fort Calhoun on the Missouri River in Nebraska to support fur trade, river traffic, and Indian relations. Much of the fort itself has been reconstructed and is now a State Park and interpretive center. On the first weekend of the month from May through October volunteers host living history weekends at the fort. Like the blacksmiths, the tinsmith was a crucial artisan in the early America military, particularly on this remote outpost. The tinsmith produced cups, lanterns, basins, canteens, and countless other items used in the everyday lives of those stationed here. Category: People
