Thanks everyone for your nice comments.
The allure of fly fishing is much than just catching fish...(although, that's nice too.)
I've always held a place in my heart for the aesthetic beauty of this delicate and artistic form of angling.

Thanks everyone for your nice comments.

This photo was taken at a tiny mountain creek in mid-April after a heavy rain.
I visited the region the other day and the "falls" had dried up completely.

After all that praise here's a critique. "At Streamside" is a tour-de-force, not a work of art. It has the impeccable perfection of studio photography, a set built according to rules. The angled rod frozen unnaturally, like a model mugging the camera; the precisely placed flies; the wet line -- all indicate artifice, not art. The image wants to be a nature shot, but cannot be because it was not discovered; it was assembled. (Even the photographer calls the rod a prop.) If someone shooting flowers or insects or birds brings along props to create images, we object. We applaud when a sensitive eye sees the world acutely and renders that vision imaginatively to show us what we missed. "At Streamside" is a top quality calendar and advertising image.

Thanks Karen,...and thank you romanelph for expressing your insight.

I think of this photo in terms of Still-Life,...a collection props and backgrounds assembled to create something visually appealing. In that context, no rules of ethics were broken.

Hey Bob, there are always critics! Your photograph is obviously set up but just about perfect. I've seen many stock photos at the Getty and Corbis sites that were far less nicely done IMHO. Many congrats on your finalist!

  Thank you Patrick.
I value critiques as long as they are offered intelligently and without malice. I feel that this one was an intelligent interpretation of one person's opinion.

This photo was originally posted as an "Element of Design",...not as a nature scenic, so I stand by my original assessment.
