Advantages Film-based over Digital and vice versa

I would like to know what are the advantages of digital photography over film-based photography and what are the advantages of film-based photography over digital photography. I'm using film-based camera and I'm considering also having a digital camera but I first I want to know if I really need to. Thanks.

  The Great Debate.

Film Over Digital. Essentially all film cameras work identically. That is, if SLRs, they allow lens interchangeability, work in auto and manual modes, etc. You can use print or slide film. Almost any photographer can give you advise.

The problem is that film and developing have a cost associated with them and you have to wait [for at least an hour] to see you results.

Digital over Film. If one doesn't consider the price of the camera, accessories, computer, printer or ink [for an inkjet printer,] you can take a lot of pictures in a short time and delete the losers. They offer a very quick way to send pictures to family and friends.

Before you purchase a digital, decide on the type of pictures you want to make. If you're into e-mail sharing only, you only need 2 MP - a 3 MP unit would probably serve you better. If you're into making large prints that you'll display, you'll need more MP.

There are a lot of thoughts on size to print ratios. The best I've seen: 3 MP for a 4X6 prints, 4 MP for a 5X7, 5 MP for an 8X10. There are a lot of folks who disagree with this, but I'm talking big prints on the wall.

There's a great article on the Pop Photo web site - I think July 2003. In it Bryan Petersen defends film cameras; I'm not sure who defends digital. It's a worthwhile read.
