Focus? How do you make it so one part of the photo is in focus (such as a flower) then have the background (a tree for instance) blury, and also what does aperture do?

The aperture setting, (f-stop), is what determines how much of the scene will be in focus. To isolate an individual object... such as a flower, set your aperature to a low number (f-5.6 or lower), and focus on the flower. The background will then be out of focus. The higher aperture numbers increase your focus range, (depth of field) progressively. At f-22, everything from the foreground to infinity should be in focus.
