Selling photos

I am looking for some guidance please, I have recently been contacted about selling the non exclusive rights to one of images. The company seems legit, the problem is I have never sold an image and have no company set up to do so. My question is do you need to have a company set up to sell your images? They also said they would print credits of my choice on the back and I have always tossed watermark ideas around but never used one, could I just use an idea I had for a watermark for the credits? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

You can create a simple "hobby" business to sell your prints. Each state has different laws governing creating a business. For the transaction to be legal you will most like be required to create and register the business and collect sales tax on the transaction. Once a year all businesses will need to file a report or tax return with the state and pay them all sales tax collected. With a hobby business you run it on a cash basis with you keeping a set of books for expenses and revenues. It is really pretty simple.

As for the question of credit for the use of your photos, that is a personal choice. You can as you suggest use a watermark on the front or something printed no the back. That depends on what you client wants to do with your image. The more they use it the higher the price should be set. As an example for them just to display at a single location is one price. To use it in a commercial publication to market and expand their business is a higher different price.

Hope this helps you get started. Good Luck !

David thank you for your information, I will look into what is involved in my state for setting up such a business.

Is it a card company? Sounds like Cardthartic...They are legit and easy to use, if it's them. Pay well, too.
