This is a forum for students of the "Outstanding Photography System".

If you are in this class, use this thread to comment on student photos.

Here are instructions:

1) Sign into BetterPhoto and upload a photo there if you haven’t already.

2) Once uploaded, get the ID# for your photo. To determine your PhotoID, go to the Pancakes icon in the upper left, click My Photos > Manage/Enter. The PhotoID is below the number. Copy this number.

3) Come back to the QnA thread and click “Respond” at the bottom of the page.

4) Enter a description or specific questions or details and then click the “Select” button below the text input box, choosing “1.” Toggle on “Notify” box if you wish to be notified. Click “Submit.”

5) On the right-hand side of the Image Uploader, you’ll see an input box for the PhotoID. Type in this number and then click the “Submit your Photo” button.

That’s how you use the "Photo ID" method to pull an existing image into your reply in the QnA thread.

POOF - And with the much needed rain comes the weeds. Even the weeds can be pretty if you look close enough.

Canon EOS 7D, Lens - EF100mm f/2.8 Macro USM, f/5, 1/6s, ISO 100, Sunny White Balance. Used a tripod and the 2 second timer

(Not sure if the details get pulled through when I upload the image - this is my first upload so I'll know on the next one!)

What step am I missing?
1. Uploaded to BP
2. Got the ID#
3. Went to QNA - respond
4. Enter question or details
5. I am about to hit select
6. Then will enter # on input box if I find it and hit submit

I have done all that up to step 5 in past and when I hit select it takes me back to upload with no ID box on the side. If you see a photo-it worked this time, if you don't - ????

Heidi, the trick is and thing that Jim didn't mention on submitting using the photo ID # is that you have to submit the photo after you upload, but BEFORE you enter it in the contest. If you don't the photo ID box won't be there. What I normally do is put it here first then enter it in the contest later. I hope this is clearer then muddy water! :-)

Actually, Heidi, I think BEFORE you enter any photo into the contest. Check step 2 at the top of the "January Countdown Thread". I've had a hard time getting the process straight.

Here is my work for the second assignment, so far, using soft suggestion.
1. The story of 1 is of my mother, who loved to bake.
2. The story of classic old working trucks. Foreground a Helms bakery truck from 1931 and in the background 2 trucks from the 40s.

Nice shot, Sylvia. I like the simplicity of the composition and the use of the cloud almost as a frame around the red, white, and blue of the flag. The branches add a touch of balance.

Way to pre-visualize!

My first attempt at an intentional blur. Taken with 28-135 lens while using the zoom feature. I used Shutter priority (1/4) with 100 ISO. I was surprised that the aperture focused @ f32. It was a large leaf bush--green with white streaks.

So here are 2 shots that I have taken and then modified in Photoshop Elements. They were originally shot in RAW. The indoor photo is in a "Sherlock Holmes" room. I adjusted for WB particularly and a few little tweeks. The other is in bright sun and I did basically the same thing just adjusting WB for different light temps. I am still trying to figure out how to save RAW files so that I know what edited file it matches with while not taking too much time on the computer. I do like shooting in RAW, however and am learning the work flow to make it go more smoothly.

This is experimenting with in-camera HDR. No post processing done. Before HDR, HDR EV 1 and HDR EV 3. I'm using a Nikon 5100. I was using a monopod so there is some change in perspective.

So Ed, the question is, which version do you prefer? Photography is so personal I believe. It seems the value in this last module is that we know how to manipulate the controls in camera and in the post-editing software so that we get the look that makes us happy, makes us smile. I too prefer to do it in camera but it is nice to have options.
I read something recently that I try to keep in my head. It was the ABC's of photography and the author said "Y is for You. Take the photo because you like it...." and there was more but that is the idea.
What I like about your post is that you shared your experimentation. What will you do with these 3? I don't know much about layers in photoshop, but could you combine them? Is there one you like better than the others?
I have found it rewarding to learn a bit more about the work flow in post-editing so that RAW photos can be manipulated fairly quickly to improve upon what I originally took without going too far.
Thanks for sharing your work.

Heidi, I prefer EV3 for balance. I don't plan to do anything with these pictures except practice some post processing. It looks like they were put in this months contest, oops! I really don't do much at all with layers. Thank you for you input and observations. I always learn something.

I'm submitting my first practice for HDR using a photo I 've previously shown since the weather has been so yucky right now. Hoping I get both through.
