Preserving EXIF in imaging software

I am just getting my feet wet with imaging software. My olympus 3040 supplies the EXIF data with the files. As I am selecting softeare I see that certain programs can use th eEXIF data and others can not. My real concern is that if I open my original images in a software like Paint Shop Pro, that does not support EXIF and then I later use another program to work with the same pictures is the exif data gone forever because the first program could not resave it with that? Is there a difference if I view and manage the picture (but not yet edit) them in Paint Shop Pro, and then use another EXIF supported program.

My thought process is that I could learn from viewing the EXIF data with the pictures. Is this a erasoable goal.

I am looking at shareware programs for organizing files and I guess I should also get one that supports EXIF . Any recommendations.

Thank you,

Wayne
