Another Lens Question I've been looking through the Q&A but haven't been able to find a satisfactory answer to my question. I am currently shooting with a 7D, mostly high school football (on the sidelines). Last Friday, mid-way through the 3rd quarter my autofocus on my 70-300 went out. It's an older lens that I used on my XTI. Because of the age, I've chosen to not repair, and just buy a new lens. I'm having trouble deciding between the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 Di LD and the Tamron 70-300 f/4-5.6 Di VC USD So my question is- Will I be missing out on focal length if I choose the better f-stop or will the 2.8 make up for what I think I'll be missing? Are there any other lenses that you can recommend under 1k? Thanks in advance for your help!

Also thinking about the canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens.

You might want to go through some of your existing photos, or perhaps the best/most successful ones from past games, and see how often you find yourself in the 200-300 range from the lens that just died. If you're in that range often, you probably won't enjoy, or be as happy, using a 70-200 as much. If you only sometimes dip into 200-300 so far, then it may not be critical to have that reach -- and the faster lens could be a nice benefit, if low lighting has been a constant challenge thus far...

I always choose the faster lens whenever I can afford it. As previously suggested, you might examine how often you used the extra length. Also keep in mind if you buy an FX full frame lens, the focal length will effectively double for both ends of the zoom range when used on a DX crop sensor camera. Thus, 200mm tele becomes 400mm in use. Good luck.
