June 2012 Countdown (aka Cocktails and Chocolate) Mid-month again...Christmas in July and all that fun stuff. It's been a busy month in my house, how about you? Hello to everyone and happy hot as heck July! I am also back to photography and BP (where else lol?) after 4 years that seemed to fly by! I left in May/June of 2008, right after I got my first (and only) gold! June's are my first month back so I am trying NOT to be really excited ;- But I AM excited about being back here, seeing many familiar faces (and new ones!) who are still the same friendly folks that are fun to share with and learn from. I don't always have time to comment but I browse everyone's images and get very inspired! The ones posted on this thread so far are amazing, as always! Great idea, Jeff, on picking fav's for others. I hope I can get to that before Finalists come out. I have a feeling it will be within a couple of days. I'm having a hard time deciding one Fav, so I'm between "Woodi-Sun & Shadow" and "Garden Candy." I already entered for today so I'll try and post them tomorrow. Best of luck to everyone!

Good grief, Usman, I might have gotten more than I bargained for. As always, your work is amazing. If I had to pick a couple, I think I'd go with Harbor Bridge. The rich colors are fantastic and the composition is works really well. I find myself spend a bunch of time exploring the details. I think my second choice would be Pakistan Monument. The balance and symmetry are incredible and the rich colors and lighting really create a strong mood. There are several others that are well deserving as well, like the owl puzzle. As always, amazing work.

Carolyn, you have some amazing sunset images. I'd have to say that Rule of Thirds is my favorite of the bunch. I love the dynamic feel and the energy of the storm. Very cool. I would love to shoot some time lapse at any of these places.

Jeff: I picked Stripes and Needs Improvement as my 2 favs from yours. Your light-motion shots are fantastic, too! The "half-orbs" or domes are really intriguing. Carolyn: Pouring Out Gold and Rule of Thirds are my choices; what amazing sky and water you have access to! Usman: I stick with my PG101 pick of Inside Gazania, but also add Who Blinks First. The Pakistan Monument was a close call... Unfortunately, I don't have my gallery set up in such a way that groups my June entries together---they are now spread far and wide across several pages, so I won't ask you all to go digging! Woot! It worked... Jackie, I feel *exactly* the same way! I'll be excited about how much I've improved or got it right, then look at everyone else's entries and think, "nope, still got a way to go!" Gotta work on this or that, don't have *amazing* subject matter, etc., etc. Thankfully, I don't get depressed and put my camera in the back of my closet (where I found a carburetor once, thanks to the hubs). It just makes me want to learn more and try harder :) Plus, I see the other amazing entries that didn't medal so that reassures me that it's not necessarily because I totally suck...haha!

It's a crap shoot, Susan.. Some months you just scratch your head and wonder how the heck that managed to get a finalist and this other one didn't. I envision a dart board. LOL..It doesn't matter what they think, anyway, I've seen people who couldn't put anything up without it getting a finalist and on other sites they couldn't hit anything. Just depends on who's doing them, what they feel like that day, etc etc etc. We have to learn to not take it personally..so I keep trying to not take it personally, but I usually do, regardless of what I say to myself or what others say to me. I know there are literally hundreds of shots every month that deserve to be finalists, and then somebody gets 10. Not that they maybe didn't deserve the 10, but think of all the people who didn't get one and should have. I'm going to shut up now, I promise!

Jeff - I have taken some amazing shots with my iPhone..such great technology. When we were in Hawaii, my canon acted up and I took many images with my iPhone and they all looked fantastic! I like Grill Detail, but I like Needs Improvement Better! My Editors Picks Start on Page 2 with American Bittern and End Page Three with White Egret Exit...its an all bird month for me! Will be going through other galleries soon for other pics but I hope the finalists are out before I can get to them!

Thanks Usman, we had been told by the rice farmer that owned the land that there were Burrowing Owls here. We drove around photographing other rice birds wen we got lucky and saw this one fly and then land. There was no way I would have spotted him if he had not flown. Hi Susan; Weekend Finalist announcements are not impossible... just not nearly as common as announcing sometime Mon-Wed. In the last 79 months of contest results, Finalists Announcements came out on Sat or Sun a combined total of 11 times. But they came out on a Mon, Tues, or Wed. a total of 49 times, combined! (Saturday remains the least-common day to announce them---only 4 times in 79 months. Monday is the champ - 18 times in the last 79 months.)

Oh wow, that is a LOT less! Back then there was no charge for a basic gallery, so that seems to have had an effect. The contest prizes were better too :) I often think there must be just one person judging for it to take so long. Oh well, I still enjoy the challenge and the site.

Yeah, it is a remarkable drop---in my 79 months of record tracking, the highest month was just under 39,000 entries; I didn't envy the judges' jobs back then! But I think you're right---the removal of the free BP membership option was probably a big driver in cutting down the # of contest entries... Anyway---doesn't look like they're likely to come out tonight (there are only 6 hours left in "tonight" for BP)... which means as of Friday, whenever they do come out, we're into really "rare" territory---only 4 months of the last 79 have ever announced later than the 26th!

They usually don't come out real late in the evening either. Usually they are out by about 5PM CST, and if they aren't, I usually quit looking for the night. On some rare occasions they have come out overnight but not often.

I dunno---my money would be on Monday for an announcement---Mondays remain the runaway favorite, most common day of the week to announce, with 23% of past contests announcing Finalists on Monday. (By comparison, Sundays are in 2nd-to-last place at 9%.) If by chance they slip to Tuesday (Tuesdays are right behind Monday in popularity - 20%) we'll see a new "first"---there hasn't been a Finalist announcement fall on the 31st of a month before ;)

Judges comments are a good sign they've moved on to rounds for Winners...! They don't put them out on images consistently, from my experience... some months, it seems there are none, other months, a nice sprinkling... I think it depends on who is involved in the judging each month; but always a nice treat to get one!

Jackie - I've seen your gallery and am in disbelief you haven't gotten a gold! It did take me a long time to get one. I joined in 2005 and got a 2nd place right before I dropped out in Mar 08. But I was also brand new to photography. You are due one girl! I feel the same way guys! Even if I'm sure I won't get anything I'm still excited for every one else and to review which finalists were chosen to go on. I think I expect to have an Aha moment where I figure out how the judges minds work...haha!

Susan you are so sweet. I am relatively new here even though I joined 2010 after just getting a camera. I kind of started in heavy leaning taking classes here and joining a club. Then very unexpectedly my husband passed away. I just didn't feel like shooting at all so I took a year off and stated back last fall. My husband bought me my camera so I am so happy when I take a nice shot.
