August 2011 Countdown Thread Oh wow - look, it's the middle of the month again ALREADY! Kids are back in school (I think pretty much everywhere now), and in some places the leaves are turning and days are getting shorter - at least, that's what is happening up here in North America. Those of you in other areas feel free to weigh in and correct me on what's really happening in the world outside my horizons. I hope everyone is having a fabulous September, and I cannot wait to see which hopefuls you all pick from last month. Fingers crossed for your favorites to go far! Break out the chocolates and beverage of your choice!

August was to be a month of all re-submits for me, but partway through I started reworking some old favorites, then slipped in some brand new entries. Makes it very hard to pick a favorite, actually! My top favorite rework in Aug. is an image that made it to 2nd Place originally, so I'll go with this rework as my "favorite pick" for the countdown... I know BP generally doesn't seem to care for border treatments, but fingers crossed anyway!

I wish they wouldn't make us guess on which day the Finalists come out...just pick a certain day, like the 20th, for example and then we would all be ready for the announcement on that day.... just a thought.... :o)

Fingers crossed, Usman... The 23rd has not been very a high-ranking date to release Finalists, and Fridays are 4th-most-common day of the week. My gut says it could be Monday... :( Jeana, if they picked a day and stuck to it, we wouldn't have this wonderful anxiety to fret over! ;) (And they do actually have a hard deadline of the last day of each month---but thankfully, they've only gone close to that late, once or twice in the last 5 years.)

Resub and keep the faith! One of my finalists (snagged two but not the one I had picked above), is four years old! It's long been a favorite of mine, and it was a finalist at a BP Summit, but this is the first tine it's gotten beyond the EP stage in the actual contest. I'm with you, Michelle... I snagged 3 Finalists this month, and all 3 were resubs of prior entries. One of my 3 this month was on its 4th resub, in fact! The other was on the 2nd entry, and the third was a total rework of a prior entry, but newly uploaded in Aug. Congratulations to the August Finalists, and best of luck in the gold round!

Thanks Christopher, I guess didn't realize you shoot with a 7D! Now all I need is your talent to go along with it! LOL! And Michelle ... I will! I have to wait until Thursday to pick it up since none on the shelf and it had to be ordered. But I've waited this long, a few more days won't matter. Now the thing is, I feel like I'm abandoning a child leaving my XTi behind. (Weird or what?)

I took exactly the same migration path---XTi to 7D. Love the 7D rapid-fire shutter, and the somewhat-improved noise levels, and the spot metering, and the extensive focus points... on and on... However, I gave my XTi to a BP friend who will be a great foster mother, so I didn't feel quite so much abandonment! ;)

Regarding resubmits, I try to save them up and do an entire month of resubmits. I've had fairly decent luck that way, and if not, there's always the resubmit pile for next time..I got a 2nd place a few month ago on one that had been through the contest about 6 times. I guess they got tired of looking at it. LOL

Big fan of resubs here---for images I *really* feel strongly about. Comes in handy too, if you have run out of new imagery---there are times of the year I just can't get out and shoot enough new material to stay "stocked up." And also, I'm a fan of reworks---one of my 3 Finalists this month went on to 2nd Place last night---it was a "new upload" for August, but was actually an image I'd shot & entered 2 years ago. I went back to the original RAW file and completely re-edited it from scratch for this Aug entry, making many improvements I didn't even know about, 2 years ago. (Even though 2 years ago, it also made 2nd Place---though it took 4 resubs back then before making 2nd!)

Can't agree more on resubs. My First Place Gold this month was a resub from last month when it gathered only an EP. So, as long as you believe in an image, do the resubs, it just might work!!! UB.
