It sounds like your auto-bracketing may have been accidentally activated. Check page 119 on your D-300 Manual to see how to set it back to "0" using the Fn Button and Main Command Dial.

Sheri: Were you using flash for these photos? If yes, then I know what the problem is. You cannot use any aperture with flash ... well you CAN but then the exposure may be incorrect. Photo 1 and 2 were made in P mode at wide apertures. So the images are fine. But for Photo 3 you must have rotated the dial and set f/16 (see the data for all the photos under each one above). That is a very small aperture and minimizes the effective reach of the small built-in flash. If you just use P mode as is, without rotating the dial to set a different aperture, most flash photos should be fine as long as you are not TOO far from the subject. Cheers! Thank you for the responses! I did check the auto bracketing as Bob had mentioned and that was the problem! Not sure how it got changed but it did! And thanks Peter for the info. I didn't know that either. I'm really enjoying your course!

I'm glad you found out a simple solution to what you first thought would be a major problem. Unfortunately, the Fn Button is positioned in such a way that it can be accidentally depressed when you pick up the camera. Then with that button depressed, you spin the Main Command Dial thinking you're just selecting a different shutter speed and you've set the Auto-Bracketing instead. (...As you may have guessed, I did the same thing myself.) Bob
