Copyright Law I gave a water color artist permission to paint one of my photos to be published in a book. The book has been published, I was given recognition in the book. Now the water color version of my photo is being used in newspaper ads and realestate sales publications without my permission or recognition. Is it legal?

I'm far from an expert on this topic, but seem to think that it depends on what rights you and he negotiated. If you gave him full rights to the image then you may be screwed. If you gave him rights for the book only then somebody owes you big time. Is the water color image being used with his knowledge and permission? You both could have a case if the images are being used without any permissions. This copyright stuff is really tricky. You might want to talk to a lawyer about the issue, esp. if the artist exceeded agreed limitations. If the image is being used w/o any permission you both need to talk to a lawyer. This sounds like a take off of the Obama photo that was converted to a painting. Jeff
