What size pictures would I get with this scanner? Hi guys. I'm thinking about buyig this scanner to scan my negatives and old pictures. It has the following spec: 4800 x 9600dpi resolution. So my question is what size pictures would I get from this scanner and is it good for the price? Thanks http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6702618/Trail/searchtext%3ESCANNER.htm

Scanner makers are not normally scam artists, but they all pull a fast one on us. That 4800 x 9600 spec is suspect. Use the lower number and ignore the higher. This scanner can return a scan 4800 pixels wide (or tall). It can do 9600 as an interpolated figure, a two-bit word for making more pixels based on the ones you have. The resulting higher 9600 pixel count probably does not mean a more detailed image. Normal printing resolution (going into most printers) is 300 pixels per inch. Divide 4800 by 300. You can get a print 16 inches wide (or tall). Canon may not be one of the highest regarded flatbeds for scanning film, but I have not used it, have not read any negative comment, and it may meet your needs. Check out user forums first. I already bought it so it's too late if it's crap lol. It seems to be ok so far, but I suppose the more I learn about it and use it, the more I will learn about it's limits or whatever. I don't think I would want to print many pictures more than 16 inches either, but you never know. Anyway thanks for the information.
