Senior Pictures
A friend of mine asked me to do her daughter's senior pictures. I'm still learning so I wasn't sure. Finally she talked me in to taking them and they really did come out nicely, her daughter loves them and some of her friends have asked me to take their's. I attached a couple of them for you all to see. I'm wondering if their is a good online place to get great prints made that she can be proud of. Anyone have any suggestions on what website would print great quailty professional looking prints? thanks

I LOVE MPIX but I've also found that Bay Photo Lab, which has software you down load for use of their templates- is endless! There are great senior cards, story boards, collage prints- I think you'd be happy! I've used it about as much as MPIX at this point!! You're pics are great!

Julie, I am also a big fan of Mpix, and use them for almost all of my digital printing. But I noticed that you shot these images on film. Mpix does offer a film developing service, where they will develop your film, scan your images and upload them to a gallery for you, then ship the negatives to you. I don't know if they offer scanning of negatives that have already been developed, but you can contact them and ask. If you are going to scan your images yourself and upload them to Mpix, be sure to scan them at a high enough resolution so that your final enlargement sizes can be printed at about 300 dpi. Chris A. I love MPIX too, but use Costco almost exclusively. They have good equipment and I can profile their printers to ensure I get the output that I want. www.drycreekphoto.com if anyone is interested.

yup- Mpix! they also have a forum at forums.mpix.com, and many of the people there are portrait photographers, but certainly not exclusively.

I commend you on doing some nice simple, relaxed poses and not doing the cheesy typical stuff. Full stiff smile, both hand under the chin with the head tilt to the side, no looking out from behind a tree. Looks like that location didn't have any trees anyway. A comfortable look at the camera often works better than the count to 3-smile-click pictures.

Oh, I hope no one is using the "1-2-3-Smile" This does leave you with forced smiles and with out any natural blush. Julies examples are Very Good, just try not to cut off the feet on a full body shot. Other then that beautiful. Debby

Sorry to burst bubbles, but "peek from behind the tree" is what a lot of seniors want, and it's about pleasing the clientele not making something unique. I ask the girls I shoot what their "dream pose" is. Behind a tree is up there. :-) I shot some photos of a young girl for free, just becuase her school photos were so awful she was devastated. I told her not to worry--I could get much better pics for her. I did (including a cute "tree peek") and just her showing the pics to her friends got me a lot of requests to take senior photos (for money). I am not interested in making money from my portrait work (I do portraits for model releases as a favor to people I care about). That said, I love the shots posted in this thread. Very unique feel to them. Be very careful to focus on the eyes though, and as Debi said--don't cut out the feet in a full shot. K...

What bubble? Vanilla wafers are cut the same way, what's that have to do somebody not going along with what everybody else sees and follows. Besides, a lot of girls deep down would like to do something they see else where but for one, they see senior pictures done the same so they feel this is what senior pictures look like. And two, since they see other ways of doing mainly in fashion and ads, they get self conscious and follow the ready made path.

Gregory, just because you take a "tree" shot doesn't mean you can't also take a unique shot--killing two birds with one stone. If a girl wants a tree shot just like all her friends--who cares? As long as the picture is flattering and makes her happy. I know what you're saying--they are done over and over again. But the reason is simple--the pose is cute and often flattering for the subject. It can also help a "bigger girl" feel less self concious--which in turn helps her to smile more naturally. There are reasons the tree shot is popular. Just because there are millions of vanilla wafers in the world doesn't mean they aren't useful for certain recipes. K...

Once again I thank you for all the comments. Karma I think tree shots are very nice and seldom do you see one where the person it looks bad. It is a great pose, I'm not sure that gregory disagree's with that either from what i'm reading I think his first comment was just about the poses I had gotten and not an attack on the tree shot. At least that's what I got out of it. As far as unique shots I think your right girls tend to choose that shot because that is what they are used to seeing and if that shot looks good and makes them look good, why not take it. Makes sense. I got lucky with these shots, we live 10 minutes from whitesands in new mexico and the girl wanted to play with lots of poses and positions. In the end, she was thrilled with the shots and got exactly what she wanted. Her being happy was what I wanted all along so, and I got some great practice and experience. So I guess everyone won. Thanks again it's great to have more experienced photographers helping me and I always learn so much from these discussions.
