Signing photo vs. matt I am starting to exhibit my photos and would like to know if there is a rule-of-thumb on where to sign a matted print? I have seen signatures right on the photo itself and other times I've seen just the matt signed. Thanks in advance for any help with this.

Paula, I posted this same question some time back. The general consensus seemed to be personal taste. I have seen several signed on the print in a silver pen and it looked nice, but I opted to sign on the mat in a #2 sharp edged pencil.

Normally limited edition prints are signed in pencil with the number of that copy and total number of copies. I would therefore say signing in pencil would probably be the best solution.

Paula I prefer putting my copyright emblem and my name on the photo itself. I have two reasons for doing it this way. One, if the person changes the mat for any reason, your name is lost. Second, there is no excuse for knowing it is copyrighted and also makes it harder for them to pirate your photo. They can of course, take in out in Photoshop or another program, but lets make it harder for them. Sherry is correct it is a very personal choice and seen both ways. Hope this helps. Kathy in NH

Thank you all for your responses to my query. I have actually done both methods, signing the actual print and at other times have signed the mat. Kathy, I agree with you and have often wondered about the loss of your signature if the mat is changed or even the possibility of it being erased if done in pencil. I guess I will continue to experiment with both methods. Thanks for the input. Paula
