Lenses
I am taking pictures at youth rodeos in covered arenas. The lighting is not good and alot of the contestants don't want me to use a flash due to scaring their animals and affecting their run. My photos are coming out dark and grainy. Is there a lense that I could upgrade to where I wouldn't have to use a flash? Or maybe I have a setting wrong. I am using a tripod and I have the Nikkor 70-300. Thanks for your help.

welcome michelle, this comes up a lot around here in the q&a. low light, slow lens.didn't include your iso setting.but i'm pretty sure your aperture setting is f5.6 at 300mm. if you've already tried 1600 iso, which will be a bit grainy, then you may need to purchase a 200mm f2.8,faster and lets more light in. but,you say they're dark not blurry? which kinda tells me your setting too fast a shutter speed. I still think it's the lead pipe in the library, sam

Thanks for your help Samuel. I went yesterday to buy a 70 - 200 mm f2.8 lense. I would have never imagined the difference the lense would make. It is amazing!! Again, thats for your help.
