I'm not one for sets or props except for maybe a hat or an ornament. Can you take the photos outside? Kids seem to interact and be less posed in an outdoor setting. Let them jump in a pile of leaves. Or throw them up in the air and catch their expressions. Hold an ornament by a colorful string and have them (if a young one) reaching up toward it, close up. That could actually be carried off in a studio type setting. I like kids to look less dressed up and more casual and "normal." A Santa or elf hat is still cute, no matter what the rest of the outfit is, as long as it's not too busy and a relatively neutral color. Have them lie on their back, with ornaments strewn around. Depending on the age of the child, you could do some fun stuff. Plus they think it's funny to have this person peering down over them. A big white poster board works well for that. GOOD LUCK!

A dog in some reindeer antlers maybe? Or use the Grinch? Or try a retro setting, like from A Christmas Story.
