Photography Question

frantic plea for help

I use a Canon Digital Rebel Camera--I was taking some pictures today--the first few were fine, no problem, then the camera stoppped focusing. It was not dropped, damaged in anyway, it just won't work. The camera zooms back & forth like it's trying to focus, but won't lock. I tried changing lenses, batteries, cleaning the sensor, resetting everything back to default--no change. Has anyone else ever had this happen? Or does anyone have any clues what may be causing this? I would appreciate any advice anyone could give me!!
Thanks,
Lish

Did you try cleaning the lens contacts on the camera body. Since you tried different lenses and still had the same problem, then it might be the contacts on the camera body not making good enough contact to the lenses.

Can you focus manually? Autofocus is determined by contrast. If autofocus fails becuse of an electronic fault, you should be able to continue using the camera manually; if not, the mirror or sensor may have been misaligned or damaged. Since this effects more than one lens, it seems the problem is in the camera (unless the autofocus switch has been turned off on all of them!), but in any case, get the camera in for repair ASAP!

Thank you both your your response--after looking over the camera some more, it appears to be a problem with the bottom mirror. When it sticks in the up position, the camera can't lock focus. When it sticks in the down postion, the camera can lock focus, but 80% of the picture is a black rectangle. Hopefully this can be fixed quickly (?) I live in a rural area & the nearest repair shop is two hours away, so, looks like I'll be taking a road trip. Any guesses on how long it will take to fix something like that?
Thanks again!
