How to Begin...

Hello, I am highly interested in beginning to use a 35mm camera. However, I have NO experience, no camera, and no idea where to even being.
Any suggestions...

Well, what kind of photography do you want to do(macro, landscape, portraiture...)? Also, what's your price range? I myself don't shoot film, but my great grandpa has had a Canon AE-1 for about 20-30+ years, and it's still working fine. You can get one used(they don't make them new anymore), body only, for about 160-250USD at BHphotovideo.com.

Megan, think of photography as a combination of the craft and your artistic vision. You say you want to use a 35MM camera; have you a particular goal in mind? I mean, why not medium format, for example? I'm not giving you an argument; just asking about your goals. Once you know the fundamental technical stuff, hopefully you will have some picture in your "mind's eye" that you want to achieve on paper - that's the creative part.

As for the craft of photography (the technical stuff), there are some basics that you need to learn in order to make the best use of them towards achieving whatever you envision as the phtographs you want to make. Different folks learn differently; some like hans on tutoring, other's prefer reading about it and enveloping the knowledge that way. You could of course take a course at the local school or perhaps camera shop, for example, where you could get some hands-on experience with handling cameras and understanding concepts like depth of field. And there are courses offered right on this website as well.

Or, you could check the library for beginning books on photography - look through a bunch because while they all state the same basic thing some might be more understandable to you based on how they're written.

Obviously, you can search threads and ask questions on this site as well.

And you can of course do a combination of all of the above.

As for equipment, perhaps with a little thought you can decide what kinds of photos you would like to be able to take, as Brendan mentioned. This might influence what gear you want to start with. There's plenty of used gear out there, thanks to digital, and still a lot of new equipment being made since 35MM film ain't going away any time soon.

SO ponder a bit, ask some questions, look through some books and go to a local camera store (a real one, not the Best Buy camera department where the clerks are often less knowledgeable than the customers). And good luck!
