Photography Question

Ellie

whats wrong with my camera?

I have an Olympus OM-1. Its a very old camera but has been in great condition up till a few days ago when the shutter release decided it had enough. it feels loose and flimsy and like its disconected itself. im not sure how much sense this makes but if anyone has had a similar problem could you lend some advise? Its a mechanical problem, something I know little about and if I can avoid spending a lot to fix it, it would be much appreciated =)

I used a pair of OM 1's for years. They're really great cameras. And although mine never went kaputsky, it sounds just as you said, that something has disconnected itself since it's a mechanical shutter release/linkage. It could be something as simple as a spring slipped out of place or a screw came loose from part of a rod in the linkage, etc.

I'm pretty sure there are parts available for the OM-1s, among other OM bodies. Since this isn't really a job you should tackle yourself, just take it to a reputable camera repair shop. My guess is that for the cost of a CLA (clean, lube and adjustment) they'll fix it about as good as new, clean it up and adjust things like the shutter speeds, the mirror, check and replace any light seals, and probably replace minor worn parts for nothing.

Now, I can vouch for the repair folks at keh.com in Atlanta. I've sent my Nikon F-2s to them over the years for preventive maintenance and they've always done a good job at a very reasonable cost. The third alternative is to see who Olympus is recommending to service these things nowadays.

And, of course, if the estimate is too high, you can always score another body to work with whatever Zuiko lenses, etc., you've got. Probably a bit more than getting yours fixed, but the dilemma there is you really don't know what you're getting into in terms of wear and tear on internal parts. So, in that sense, I'd try and get mine fixed.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Thanks so much Mark. Atlanta may be a bit far for me. Im all the way in New Zealand but I do know of some great places here and one in particular that specialise in mechanical rather than digital problems.
Thanks again for your time to help me out =)

Hey Mark. Turns out it was a jam and had something to do with the self timer locking up even tho I dont use it. Its such an old camera and the technition agreed with me that its time is almost up. The great thing about it is that he didnt charge me. He found the problem straight away and said it was minor and took him no time. Thanks again for taking the time to reply =)
