Photography Question

Sandra J. Troupe

How do I get my computer to accept RAW image data?

I have a Canon Digital Rebel and have been trying to learn the manual settings but I can not load the RAW images to either the MAC or PC. We have iPhoto, photoshop and final cut pro. What am I doing wrong?

  Sandy,

Did you install the software that should have came with your camera?
Digital Photo Professional is Canons' RAW imaging editing software. If you don't have it you should be able to download the latest version from Canons' website:

http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=DownloadDetailAct&fcategoryid=314&modelid=9430

Copy the above link and paste in you browser. When the page comes up, select drivers/software. Scroll down the list and check off Digital Photo Professional and download.

Note: Every camera manufacturer uses a different format for their RAW images, which is why you cannot open or edit in PS or any of the other programs.
I beleive you may have to go to Adobes sight and download the camera model specific drivers or whatever, in order to work directly on the RAW image files from your camera.

Hope this helps.

Bob

  Hi Bob
Thanks for writing back.
There are several nests of birds returning an d I took about 30 manual photos using the information by our BetterPhoto companions and of those there were 12 that looked well on the LCD but when I downloaded the microdrive it corrupted the data and all the photo were lost. The info was great I actually got photos that looked like something very close to my subject (jumping for joy)
I received 4 software programs with my camera all are on my computers they are Adobe Photoshop Elemente 2.0, ArcSoft Camera Suite1.1, Canon EOS Digital Solution Disk 6.1, and Canon Digital Camera solution disk 9.0. On the MAC is OS X and on the PC is Microsoft Windows Professional. I will go to the link you suggested and see what they might have for my camera I'll let you know what happens.
Thanks again,
Sandy

  your welcome Sandra:

I've been doing some checking for you. So far, what I've discovered is PS Elements will not recognize images in the RAW format. However, Photoshop CS will.

I have version 8.0 of Canons' solution disk which contains viewer utility, Capture program, Photostitch, and drivers for uploading your pictures from the camera via USB connection. I'm not familiar with the Digital Camera Solution disk. Could be that is where the TWAIN and WIA drivers are.
The second disk that I have is the Digital Photo Professional disk which is the RAW image viewing and editing software. However, I have since downloaded the newer version 2. whatever. This is the software I gave you the Canon site for.
I'm not really familiar with the Rebel so I don't know if they use a different RAW image format from the 20D or not.
I'll see what else I can find out for you in the meantime.

Bob

  Okay Sandra:

The viewer utility included in your software package should allow you to view and edit RAW images. In fact, the one I have allows me to do everything the camera would allow in the menu options.
The Canon site recommended using either the viewer utility of the RAW image converter. However, I have seen no image converter.
The Digital Photo Professional software I have from Canons' site has a few more features then the viewer utility. Neither one however will allow you to do the things you can do with third party software like elements.
They do allow you to adjust brightness, contrast, exopsure, color, and sharpness.
From what I've read on this site, shooting in RAW format with the cameras sharpness setting at the middle is the way to go. And then use the RAW image software to sharpen the image.
Apparently the computer software utilizes better algarithms for this process and doesn't produce the halo effect that you would see if increasing the sharpness in the camera.

Well, good luck.

Bob

HI Bob Thanks For all your help Canon said the drivers on my disk are faulty but I can get new ones from the web link you gave me. When the kids finish with homework I'll down load them. Also they said I can only have one format on the micro drive at a time or it confuses the computer and it will freeze my program. Now time for more practice good thing my four sons daughter husband dog guinea pig and fish have no way to escape my lens. (laughing & smiling) Thanks for the help. Sandy

  Hi Sandra,

glad to be of some help. and glad Canon discovered the faulty drivers or we'd be pulling our hair out. LOL

Don't understand though why have two different formats would confuse the computer.

I have shot, and subsequently uploaded JPG & RAW at the same time without a problem. I'm running Windows XP on a PC platform, so I don't know if you operating system would be the problem or what.

Anyow, Glad to be of help

Bob

I had the same problem, and didt realize that windows xp wont recognze raw viewing. the new windows release will, but I downloaded Microsoft RawViewer, which will allow you to download from the camera and view, but not edit. Yea you need a plug in for PS, or get CS-2 to edit, but what I decided to do was just shoot raw, and the canon software lets me save it as tiff uncompressed, and then I can edit in Ps ok.

I had the same problem and I have a rebel and elements 3.0 You need to download the RAW converter from the Adobe site. IT WILL WORK. I spent hours getting this figured out. My RAW files open right when I put my card in the reader. If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me I'm happy to help. I had ALOT of help getting this done.

Mike.
