How do I change aperture on Sigma 70-200mm 2.8?

I just bought a used Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO lens and I can't get the aperture to go below 3? I'm using a Nikon D70 and the aperture won't go below f/3 in either manual or aperture mode. Is there something I can do to the mount to get it to go down the extra stop?

My appologies if you already know this...
While the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 is a "D" lens with aperture ring, the D70 is designed to control the aperture from the camera. So the aperture ring on the lens must always be locked on the smallerst aperture (largest f-number, ie. f/32) to be used on the D70. In Av and M modes the desired aperture is selected on the camera using the sub-command dial (the one next to the shutter button).

Kind of curious about aperture "F3". Is this what is displayed on the camera's control panel (top LCD)? That would be a bit odd as cameras typically will only display aperture values to the nearest 1/3 stop. The 1/3 stop settings between f/2.8 and f/4 are 3.1 and 3.5. f/3 is virturally the same as f/2.8, it's only 2/10 of a stop different.

On the other hand, if you are reading the EXIF data for a photo when editing it on your computer, there are a couple different aperture fields. FNumber should be the expected 2.8. But there are two other fields called Aperture Value and Max Aperture Value which convert the f-number to APEX units (Additive system of Photographic EXposure). APEX units use a logarithmic conversion such that f/2.8 = 3.0, f/4 = 4.0, f/5.6 = 5.0, f/8 = 6.0, etc.
