Fill Flash

Will my Nikon SB-50DX provide any fill when taking a photo on a golf course of 8-10 people? If not, any suggestions? I was thinking of using my Tamron 28-105mm 1:4-56.D lens. I have a Nikon N60 camera.
Thanks-
Anndrea

Didn't you ask something like this before, Anndrea?

Well, to answer: sure, any flash will provide fill - the question is 'will it be enough?'. And the answer to that depends on how far away from your group you plan to be.

Light falls off according to the inverse square rule - the amount of light falling on the subject at 8 feet is 1/4 as much as at 4 feet. I would think the SB50 is powerful enough as long as you don't stray more than 20-ish feet from the group.

As for "fill to what?" - you don't mention what the ambient light will be - a sunset perhaps? So you would want to set your lens aperture to allow for a good exposure of that, and with the group in the foreground have the SB-50 put out enough light so as to illuminate them as opposed to them coming out as sillhouettes.

If it's important, I'd suggest shooting a test roll under similar conditions just to see what various setting will do (take notes, too). You could ask the lab to process and make a CD without bothering to produce prints, so you could see the output without wasting paper or (too much) money.

  Short answer:
Unless the 8-10 people are tightly grouped, the on cam flash will not cover all of them.
The closer you get to the group, the more flash intensity you will have, but at the cost of a smaller area covered. Get further away and you spread the light more but now at reduced intensity. Kind of a catch 22; yes?
My suggestion?..If possible, skip the flash in this instance and look to shoot either in the shade or on a overcast day.

May your light be pure,

Pete
