Photography Question

Sharon King

portrait photography equipment

I am looking into buying some backdrops and lighting equipment for portraits. I have a cannon digital rebel EOS camera. I have been using natural window lighting and a blue photo flood bulb, which has been working okay, but sometimes I get hot spots from the bulbs. I would like to try maybe a soft box or umbrella lighting. What do you suggest I start out with, and who has reasonable prices on equipment? Thanks, Sharon

Since I don't use a digital, I don't understand the hot spots you mention. However, if you're using blue photo floods, try moving your light stand away from you subject and use a tripod [if uou not doing so.]

You can buy a white umbrella and mount it so that your photo floods shine through it. This will give you a diffused lighting.

After you get past these methods, you can try bouncing a strobe into the white umbrella. The only problem with this technique is that you really can see what the final product will be before the picture is snapped. With a digital this, certainly, is less of a problem than it is when one is using film.

Once you get past these methods, you're into expensive equipment. Softboxes, better photo lighting, etc. is expensive and, until you exhaust the cheaper alternatives [from both a use and a developed proficiency basis]might be better left alone.
