Can a sticky shutter cause half exposed photo?

I have had a problem intermently. Where the photos come out half exposed. Half of the photo will be black. I have a subsequent photos 99% not there also! Of course the one my daughet REALLY wanted!!!! The photos were all taken outside no flash, 800 speed film. Automatic setting. Telephoto lenses. I looked at the camera body and the edge is dirty with sand, and the shutter curtain has black stick goo on it!! I will attempt to clean it with qTip and alcohol. Any other suggestions!!!

If this is a Canon, there's a rubber shock absorber in there that when it starts to break down from age leaves sticky stuff on the shutter blades. Cleaning the blades when work until more stuff gets on it.
Need to replace the rubber thing to make it completely stop. It's not expensive and didn't take long, at least when I did it. Can't say it'd be the same for a non certified place.
