Photography Question

Problems with flash&equipment

Can I take a good backdrop picture without buying fancy equipment or having an extra flash on my camera? I know this may sound like a stupid question to a professional, but I am such a beginner when it comes to taking indoor pictures. I don't know anything when it comes to equipment and lighting. I don't even know what most of that stuff is. I usually depend on natural lighting.Help me please!!!

Hi Amber, I am not necessarily the most qualified person to answer this question, however nobody has responded yet. At least this way we can pop your question back up near the top of the list so someone else may see it.

I know that lighting systems are expensive and if you're just beginning lets talk about a different way to go. There is something called a slave which is a tiny piece of equipment that attaches to the bottom of a flash. When the flash on your camera goes off, it triggers the slave, which triggers the extra flash. Most people mount these extra flashes on tripods and locate them to aim where they need additional light. You can find used ones at some camera stores or on ebay. Just an idea.

Other than buying extra equipment, cover a sheet on cardboard with aluminum foil. Set your backdrop up where you will have good natural light and then place your new reflector so that it will add more light on your subject.

Hope this helps.

  Hey Amber,

My sister actually has a really good thread going with a lot of great information on there, even how to build your own very INEXPENSIVE backdrop holder. Check out this thread, see if this helps!
