Photography Question

black bar on photos

Hi,
I have a problem with my Nikon D70. A black bar runs horizontally (bottom) across the long part of the frame. It starts showing as of 1/4 sec and lower speed. I didn't use a flash.
Does anyone have an idea what this could be? I've been checking on the internet but haven't found anything useful.
The shop where I bought the camera said it'll have to be send in for repair (they had no real clue what the problem was) and that will leave me without a camera for a least 4 weeks. So I'm hoping it's something I can fix myself.
Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer this question.
Els

Looks to me like a sticking shutter curtain. Not something you can fix yourself, best to have a serviced by a professional. Check with Nikon Customer Service.

Try changing your batt's first, one new and one old can cause curtain problems. If not you may have a piece of dirt preventing the shutter from working properly. You can use a lint free cloth or a brush, do not use an air compressor unless it has a water filter or you can get water drops in your camera, I dont like canned air unless you know how to use it properly, it can also leak and cause problems.

  Hi Jon and Steven,
Thanks so much for having taken the time to answer my question! Well appreciated!
Sorry I didn't respond any sooner. Wanted to finish the course first before sending camera in for repair.
It went in for repair 3 times in a row! I just got it back and it seems to work fine again. This is what they replaced: the shutter, the aperture control unit and the sequence-motor. Luckily it was still in warranty.
Keeping my fingers crossed now (the moments I'm nót photographing, at least...)
Cheers,
Els
