Image Quality with Canon 20d Hi...I purchased the Canon 20d and absolutly love the quality, sharpness, and clarity I get with photos taken 3 feet or less. My photos taken with the subject more than 3 feet away seem to be not sharp or clear. I use a canon 50mm f/1.8 lens and the close up photos are outstanding. Can someone tell me what is wrong with the photos where the subject is more than 3 feet away. Thanks

Hi Tom, It would be great you post the pics which are sharp (close up) as well as pics which are 3 feet away. We can able to guide you. With regards,

You've had the camera a while, so you have probably checked this, but the camera's standard setting (preferences) for sharpness is not at it's highest setting. I found that I liked the crisp image better and have reset mine to the highest level. The standard setting gave my photos a "soft" look, especially with subjects farther away.

Dumb question. Is it perhaps set on Manual Focus? Or is Autofocus non-functional? Arthur

Without seeing an example picture its hard to say, but what has already been mentioned are all good things to check. Most of the time I have seen problems are when the wrong autofocus point is selected. The 20D has 9 focus points, so if you are focusing on a scene, and it picks up a focus point to the left right or lower than what you are shooting, it may come out out of focus. Try what Nick mentions, select a single focus point on what you want to shoot. As for the in camera sharpening, I'd recommend leaving that set low in the camera and adjust in photoshop. Its easier to increase in photoshop than decrease a picture thats already to sharp coming out of the camera. More control that way.
