Photography Question

For the Wife

My husband wants to buy me a new camera as a present. We have discussed classes for photography and I might take them next year.
What camera would give me the best of both worlds? Are there cameras with auto focus and, if I do well in my studies, allow manual operation for more interesting pictures?

I'm in the same situation. I wanted to jump into photography, but I also wanted to learn it to it's fullest. Being on a limited budget, I searched on my own and with the help of friends and found the Canon Rebel 2000 to be the best choice for me. It has seven automatic modes or you can manually set shutter speed, aperture priority, manual exposure; it has automatic depth of field, multiple exposures, bulb exposure, and you can select ISO film speed. I feel also that for price the focus of the lens can't be beat. I hope this ranting answers your question.

It does indeed help... it is good to know how much the Rebel is capable of. This is a great beginners camera because it inspires you to experiment and learn while giving you beautiful photos right from the start.

Current best price we could find is at cameraworld.com but Amazon.com has it, too.
