Alan, It's never "too late" to start one. There are many types of professional photography: commercial, editorial, portrait, wedding, stock, gallery (art), etc. What amateur photography have you done before? What would you like to do? The first step is understanding general photography techniques. Most smaller studios do a combination of portrait and wedding with some commercial and editorial work on the side. Most adult education programs at local community colleges offer course(s) in photography. They are typically taught by local professionals. This may help you find some direction for yourself and help you network into the profession. -- John
