Spot vs. Partial metering

I believe the Canon Rebel 2000 (which I had stolen from me) has spot metering. I'm cosidering either an Elan II or the new Elan 7 but neither has spot metering, just partial and at some percetage number (9.5%) that I really don't understand.

What's the difference between spot and partial metering? What am I sacrificing for chosing one over the other? What does the percentage number mean in partial metering?

Spot metering is taking a measurement off a very fine area - usually around the 3% of the total photo or even less. This is usually very good, because you can locate an object of roughly 18% grey, (Eg someone's skin) and use that as your measurement.

Unfortunately, the equipment to measure such a fine spot tends to be a little expensive, so "partial metering" is a compromise. 9.5% is too large to be called a spot - what it means is that the centre 9.5% of your photo is measured for lighting. If you consider it, that can be quite a large area to measure off.

What you can do to improve your measurement though, is to zoom all the way in, get your measurement, do an exposure lock, then recompose to the desired photo.

Good luck!

Ken.

The Canon Rebel 2000, Elan II and Elan 7 all have Partial metering of 9.5% (or 10%) instead of true Spot metering. In the middle of the view finder of the Rebel 2000 is a faint circle that indicates the area metered when set to Partial metering. The viewfinders of the Elans do not indicate the Partial metering area so clearly because the Partial metering area can be linked to any of the focus points.

  D'oh, I goofed.
The Elan II/IIe focus screen DOES show the Partial Metering circle around the center focus mark. Partial metering can be linked to the other focus marks, but the area is not indicated on the focus screen.
